What does music education give a child beyond the ability to play an instrument?
That question was at the heart of The Next Note, a recent gathering at Mason Music Foundation’s Woodlawn studio. Friends and community members joined us for a morning of student performances, personal stories, and conversations about the lasting impact of music.
MMF students Rhodes and Persia shared their musical talents, but it was their reflections on learning music that offered a deeper look at what happens inside our classrooms every week.
Rhodes, a piano student, spoke about the encouragement he receives from his teacher, even when something is difficult.
“I feel like no matter how many times I mess up, I know at practice, he’s like, ‘You know, we can just try again.'”
For vocalist Persia, the relationship with her teacher, Dr. Lockett, has been equally meaningful. “I think I’ve come very far being under her wing,” she shared. Dr. Lockett echoed that sentiment, describing the joy she finds in getting to know her students and helping them reach their potential.
The impact of music education extends beyond the studio, too. Rhodes’s father spoke about how emotional it is to hear his son play and described music as a foundation for both creative and personal growth.
For MMF founder Will Mason, these experiences reflect why he believes so deeply in the power of music. He shared how learning an instrument taught him perseverance, gave him a sense of belonging, and opened doors throughout his life.
“If music can do all of that for me, I believe it can do that for anybody,” Will told guests.
That belief is at the heart of Mason Music Foundation. Through individualized instruction, mentorship, and performance opportunities, MMF helps children develop skills, confidence, and connections that reach far beyond music. Our tuition assistance program helps make those opportunities accessible to families who might otherwise face financial barriers.
The Next Note was a reminder that what starts with music can stay with a child for a lifetime.
